Star Publications was founded in 1971. The Company set up its office in Penang and The Star newspaper is the Malaysia's first provincial tabloid English newspaper.
It was the first newspaper to introduce the modern method (at that time) of newspaper production - electronic typewriters and offset printing.
In 1976, The Star graduated from a regional newspaper to a national daily. During the early 80s, The Star moved from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to accommodate a growing staff force and incorporated the latest printing technologies.
The Company began publishing its own magazines - Kuntum (Bahasa Malaysia monthly educational magazine), Shang Hai (Chinese monthly business magazine, Galaxie (fortnightly English entertainment magazine) and Flavours (bi-monthly English magazine on creative food and lifestyle).
In 1995, Star Publications (M) Berhad was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange main board.
In 2002, the Company began its operations in the new state-of-art printing plant in Shah Alam called Star Media Hub and Bayan Lepas, Penang called Star Northern Hub in 2003, offering increased printing capacity and greater flexibility for newspaper pagination and colour.
